Valerie Red-Horse, of Cherokee ancestry, graduated cum laude from UCLA’s Theater Arts Department in 1981 and proceeded to establish herself as an acclaimed actress and filmmaker. In 1995 her feature screenplay LOZEN, the true story of an Apache woman warrior, was selected and workshopped at the Sundance Writers Lab. An entrepreneur at heart, in 1996, Ms. Red-Horse launched RED-HORSE NATIVE PRODUCTIONS. The first project, NATURALLY NATIVE, an independent feature which Red-Horse wrote, produced, co-directed, starred in, and distributed, premiered at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, and secured a U.S. theatrical release. In 2002, Red-Horse produced and directed, TRUE WHISPERS, an award winning PBS/ITVS documentary about the Navajo Code Talkers, produced with Gale Anne Hurd/Valhalla Motion Pictures. Ms. Red-Horse produced, wrote and directed POP HUNTER’S DEW DROP INN for NAPT/PBS and wrote the segment entitled, “The Gift”, within BEAUTY, a MOW Teleplay for Will Smith’s Production Company, Overbrook, in Association with NBC. Prior projects include WINDOWS ON MARS (NEA; producer/co-director) and LIVING VOICES (NMAI; producer/director). Red-Horse is currently producing/directing a film for the Choctaw Nation regarding their involvement in WWI, is consulting on Classic Media’s animated feature “TUROK: SON OF STONE” (February 2008 release) and is also attached to direct two feature films: the Standing Bear story depicting the first American Indian Human Rights Trial and “Echota” the Cherokee Trail of Tears Epic.
Ms. Red-Horse is the founder of two non-profit organizations and was bestowed the 2007 Legacy of Leadership Award by Spelman College. She is a current member of the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild. In addition to her entertainment expertise, Ms. Red-Horse also heads the investment banking division of Western International Securities, personally holding six securities industry licenses; she has raised over $2 billion in capital for American Indian Tribal Nations and their casino/gaming enterprises. She has been married to former NFL football player, Curt Mohl for 25 years; they have three children, ages 22, 18 and 9.
Red-Horse currently heads the Tribal Finance Division and the Tribal Asset Management Division of Western International Securities. She works with tribal nations throughout North America providing them with financing and economic development solutions, specializing in gaming, infrastructure and long term financial planning. Ms. Red-Horse has assisted tribes in financings ranging from $1 million to $500 million and has been requested to testify, as a professional expert, regarding tribal finance for both State and Federal Legislative bodies.
Red-Horse earned a B.A. with Cum Laude honors from UCLA and previously was the founder and majority shareholder of Red-Horse Securities, LLC, and Native Nations Securities where she served as Chairman and CEO. She began her securities industry career in 1978 in the Investment Banking and High Yield Bond departments of Drexel Burnham Lambert. Red-Horse has been profiled in cover stories of the WALL STREET JOURNAL, FORTUNE SMALL BUSINESS and MINORITY BUSINESS ENTREPRENEUR. In addition to finance, Ms. Red-Horse is a diversely accomplished entrepreneur, heading successful firms in the entertainment (film/television production), advertising specialties, and cosmetics industries. She is also the founder of the Hollywood Access Program for Natives (H.A.P.N.), a non-profit educational/training organization for Native youth.
Red-Horse holds six Securities Registrations including that of a principal and is also a licensed Life Insurance Agent.
